HIMEYURI CENOTAPH[HIMEYURI-NO-TOU]

The Himeyuri Cenotaph commemorates the students and teachers from the Okinawa Female Normal School and the Okinawa Prefectural Girls’ First High School, who perished during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

One year after the battle ended, the Cenotaph was built on the area above a limestone cave in which most of the schools’ casualties occurred.

●Erected: April 5, 1946 (The first Himeyuri Cenotaph. (The current Himeyuri Cenotaph was erected in June 1957.)

●Engraved inscriptions: 227 people
