①SCHOOL LIFE AT HIMEYURI

This Exhibition room shows life at school for the Himeyuri before the Battle of Okinawa.

Himeyuri students grew up in a time of war and their experience was deeply affected by the militarism that characterized education at that time.

②HIMEYURI STUDENTS AT THE FRONT

Soon after the battle commenced, the Himeyuri students were mobilized to the Okinawa Army Hospital. Real war proved to be very different from anything they had imagined. Their service brought danger into their lives.

③HIMEYURI SURVIVOR TESTIMONY VIDEOS

In this room, testimonial videos of student survivors are shown. At the time of filming, the survivors, who were in their 60’s and 70’s, recollected their war experiences while visiting various sites of the Battle of Okinawa.

➃REQUIEM

In this room, the souls of 227 students and teachers that perished during the battle gaze out in repose. The photographs on the wall are testaments to the certitude of their lives. Himeyuri testimonies that fill large volumes and the diorama of the Ihara Third Surgical Cave, allowing visitors a glimpse into their war experiences.

⑤HIMEYURI SURVIVORS AFTER THE WAR

This room honors the strides made by the Himeyuri survivors. After a long silence, former Himeyuri students stood up to speak out about their war experiences, resulting in the founding the Himeyuri Peace Museum.

⑥THE PASSAGE TO PEACE—Rotating Exhibition Room

Added in April 2004, this space mainly presents our rotating exhibitions. It also serves multi-purposely to create opportunities for younger generations to think and talk about peace.
